Karel Appel

Born in Amsterdam in 1921, Karel Appel emerged as one of the most influential figures of post-war European art. He received his artistic training in his native city and held his first solo exhibition in 1946, marking the beginning of an international career that would shape the course of modern expressionism. In 1949, Appel became a founding member of the avant-garde COBRA group, alongside artists such as Corneille and Asger Jorn. This movement, rooted in spontaneity and artistic freedom, profoundly influenced his work and quickly gained recognition across Europe and beyond. Appel's paintings were soon exhibited internationally, with important shows in cities such as Paris, Brussels, and throughout the United States.
