Martin Wollmer

Martin Wollmer Born 1939, Cologne, Germany Martin Wollmer’s artistic journey began in Cologne, where he was born in 1939. He trained early under the respected church painter Windelschmidt, before continuing his studies in Cologne between 1960 and 1963—a formative period marked by a profound shift in the European art landscape. Surrounded by a generation seeking new visual languages, Wollmer absorbed the spirit of artistic departure that would later define his own work. From 1964 onwards, he established himself as a church painter on the Lower Rhine, receiving numerous commissions for ecclesiastical works across Germany. These early years reflect a deep understanding of tradition, craftsmanship, and symbolic composition. Yet, driven by an inner restlessness and a desire to explore beyond convention, Wollmer gradually turned toward the evolving currents of contemporary art. Influenced by the dynamic impulses emerging from the United States, he sought dialogue with fellow artists who had shaped and survived the post-war era, reconnecting with the artistic questions that defined Europe after 1945. His work reveals a growing affinity for Expressionism and the spirit of the Cobra movement—embracing emotional intensity, freedom of gesture, and a bold, intuitive approach to form and color. Today, Martin Wollmer’s oeuvre stands as a compelling bridge between tradition and artistic liberation—rooted in craftsmanship, yet driven by a continuous search for expressive depth.
